The benefits to the community are that it would create awareness in the community and among schoolchildren of the importance of protecting and enhancing our community water resources in Balla as well as the local and migratory wildlife using the Turlough in Drimadoon Balla including Whooper Swans and a number of wild duck. This project is supported by NPWS, Mayo County Council, Sharon Cameron Environmental Officer Mayo County Council and Mick Keane Local Water Communities Officer.
We applied for and were granted €2000 under the Community Water Development Fund to build a Birdwatching Hide and we are in the process of getting this done. We also intend to apply to SWMDC for funding to develop ancillary works and car parking at the site. ( see pics & maps)
